Gardina
A wine distillate from the garden of Katogi Averoff
Katogi Averoff is releasing Gardina, a wine distillate produced from grape varieties native to Metsovo. In the local Vlach dialect, gardina means garden - this spirit is both inspired by and dedicated to its natural environment.
Katogi Averoff’s garden is nestled in the mountains of Pindus. It hearkens to nature, converses with birds and keeps company with wild animals. Inside the garden, native vines coexist with wildflowers, centennial trees and dandelions. In wintertime, the garden weathers the heavy rains and strong winds, endures the snow and awaits spring to be born again. In the summertime, it enjoys the bright, warm mornings. And then when autumn arrives, it generously offers its grapes, giving birth to Gardina.
Katogi Averoff is reviving the forgotten local varieties of Pyknoassa, Gudaba, Vlachavona and Early Metsovo. They are cultivated by hand, the grapes harvested in the autumn to be vinified with the utmost care. The wine is distilled at Katogi Averoff’s distillery and then bottled and set off on a journey that will bring Metsovo’s aromas to all wine enthusiasts.
Gardina combines and reflects the rich biodiversity of Metsovo, the four native grape varieties and the intense human effort required to produce a unique spirit that encapsulates the desire for life and creation.
